The LNP has held Federal power for nineteen of the past twenty five years. The left’s offering of a mix of old time socialism and new time identity politics is voter repellent.

The ALP offers "old time socialism"?? Quite genuine LOL. And this applies still more to the NSW party, which is even by Aussie standards fantastically right wing.

Yeah. Speaking as an ALP member, not even the Left of the party is willing to embrace socialism anymore. I mean, the ALP quit Socialist International a couple of years ago.

I did not actually know this.

Whitlam had to lose an election first, as well.

And it appears vaccination numbers are shockingly low in Oz, things could easily get ugly there.

There is quite a lot of support for decriminalisation in Europe, no??

(though it varies from country to country, obviously)

I don't normally subscribe to the "my enemy's enemy is my friend" mentality, but when it comes down to Facebook one might just be prepared to make an exception Tongue

Coalition leadership has been sorted in party room. Libs as expected, Peter Dutton elected unopposed, Sussan Ley elected as deputy unopposed after Karen Andrews, Jane Hume and Bridget Archer withdrew. Meanwhile in the Nationals David Littleproud has toppled Barnaby Joyce (they never release numbers but sounds like it was a solid margin) with Senate Whip Perin Davey unopposed as deputy (she’s completely anonymous prior to now, clearly chosen in the need of gender balance not called Bridget McKenzie.

Ah, a coronation. Just as well those never go wrong.....

boatist = someone who supports unauthorised boat arrivals. Or, less charitably, the illegal immigration racket under the guise of asylum seeking.

So the fact that the Nadeslingam family is home must enrage you.

Genuinely, why do you feed them?

In other words, gone for 40 years in the West and not coming back outside the dreams of Corbyn's Ten Pound Trots. British Labour needs to reinstate an actual membership fee and a 12 months of membership before you can vote for Labour's leader. Weed out the trots and tankies.

I first joined the party four decades ago, pal.

The Greens national vote is only just above what they got at their peak in 2010.

So its actually their......highest vote ever?

Yes, doing away with political parties *is* a bad idea.

(though I do appreciate you likely weren't being entirely serious)

The media is a bigger factor in the decline of our political discourse.

Tongue

The problem with abolishing parties is that governments will still need to be formed, ministers still ned to be appointed, and people will still have ideological commonalities and divides, meaning coalitions will form that will gradually develop more structure, financial clout and rigidity. Parties are inevitable! As a perfect example, it'll be interesting to see just how long these teal independents last as theoretically separate entities - most of them already have a common donor pool.

Though I'm sure it's obvious to most here that mainstream parties across the western world are in dire straits and badly need major reform.

No party reform is going to be successful in the current media landscape.

Yes, media reform is the key to literally everything.
