I don't normally subscribe to the "my enemy's enemy is my friend" mentality, but when it comes down to Facebook one might just be prepared to make an exception Tongue

Again, don't kid yourselves about Morrison's intent. This is another sop to Murdoch and Costello, designed to increase the domination of the right over Australian media. Morrison doesn't exactly like the fact that people on social media can criticise his government freely, so is looking to use any means necessary to shut them down.

Media Watch looks at Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Barnaby Joyce regarding their intention to restrict social media.

https://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/episodes/social/13580000

Long overdue. Facebook needs to be restricted massively.

I guess you could argue that it has simply unleashed humanity, but either way, both need to be put back in their box.

The point is surely that Facebook has mostly unleashed the worst of humanity.

Yeah, I was just watching a guy playing NFL on Facebook (like Twitch) and he was a de-evolved version of a human with AD-HD. Swearing and making racist comments about African Americans. Disgraceful.

Nothing good was going to come of the situation.

Facebook has gone to the gutter. It's like buskers in a city. Someone from the council comes around and screens out the bad ones like in Perth.

Just in case anyone thought the current government is made up of anti-China hawks:

I don't know what Murdoch and Costello have to do with it, but you can be sure that the intent of this type of regulation is to prevent people from having anonymity on social media so that ordinary citizens can be more easily sued by politicians for "defamation."  Peter Dutton is engaging in a lawsuit against a random guy on Twitter right now.  A preview of what is to come.  No doubt a certain state premier would absolutely love it if Victoria Police had access to the real names of every person who supports protests, too.  We're heading down a dark path.

Lol. Don't know what Murdoch and Costello have to do with it? Mate, they control virtually all of the media in this country between them. You have to be wilfully ignorant not to acknowledge that this is a blatant sop to them.

Yes, I'm well aware of the Twitter rot that attributes every last problem in this country to Rupert Murdoch, which is a bit trite and intellectually lazy at this point.  Obviously the media market in Australia is heavily concentrated and there is plenty of sloppy journalism.  But Scott Morrison wants to take away your anonymity on social media for much more nefarious reasons than anything to do with a media empire that, by all accounts, is far more successful and arguably more pernicious in several other more significant markets.  Australia is just a small serve side of fries for Rupert Murdoch even if he started out here.

Peter Dutton has a pretty strong case. The guy called him a "rape apologist".

Ultimately, these people have families and psychos with South Korean plastic in their hands need to be held to the same level of account as the speaking public

Facebook and social media have enabled some really unhinged people to attack politicians voraciously. These are not well people and they get worse.

It will be interesting to see the outcome.

Left wingers who try defamatory No Platform crapola against political enemies haven’t got much time left, either. The Wild West nature of the internet was eventually going to run into the libel and slander problem.

Australian media is the peak of confusion. We need a Government enquiry into the extremely low quality of our media during the COVID pandemic.

Every parent's worst nightmare. Two young children missing in Western Australia.

1. Cleo (Four y.o.)

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-16/missing-4-year-old-girl-sparks-seach-wa-carnarvon/100544980

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-17/search-for-missing-4-year-old-girl-continues-wa-carnarvon/100545576

2. Unnamed (Eight y.o.)

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2021-10-13/walpole-search-update-day-four/100536314

Both pretty dire situations.

That would be heart breaking for the parents who will face years of grief for a momentary lapse of supervision, if at all.

I feel sorry for the brother in the second case. A  cry for help that will haunt him for life.

I've been seeing some good news. It looks like the longest lockdown in the world (Melbourne) is coming to an end ahead of schedule on Thursday and with more freedom back than expected. It must have been an awful time for Melburnians, so that will be a huge relief.

Meanwhile, this may be a false hope, but are Australian politics finally coming together on climate change? It looks like the business community, Newscorp and ScoMo are all backing net zero, and the last holdouts are the Nationals. And the pressure seems to be for them to get a deal so it looks like regional communities will get paid off so they support the target. Of course the hard part is actually implementing the emissions reductions, but it would be great progress if it's no longer an argument about whether they need to act on climate change.

The Greens once again prove how unhinged they are, now advocating environmental personhood, thus giving the Coalition an easy campaign theme of “the Labor-Greens coalition government will give your house the same rights as you. It will be against the law to wee in your own toilet!”

The Nationals are pretty hardcore against any form of emissions reduction unless they get tens of billions for rural Australia.

The interesting part is that Joel Fitzgibbon, Labor's resident coal guy and Labor Right powerbroker, has pretty much backed a 2050 target, meaning Labor is finally united in pursuit of net zero by 2050, at least in the parliamentary sense.

It is distinctly possible the Nats walk out on the coalition at this point.

Surely the best outcome for everyone involved is for them just to get paid off, though?

You have to assume that the Nats would act in good faith, which is far from certain when idiots like Matt Canavan oppose a 2050 target under all circumstances. This is a man who denies climate change played any role in the bushfires last year, and cosplays as a tradie and miner despite the fact he is literally as white-collar as they come.

If they do, would the Libs run candidates in National seats and the vice versa in some Liberal seats?

The Nationals don't really stand a chance outside of the rural and maybe the mining seats, but the latter I imagine will swing between Labor or One Nation.

I can;t see anything really happening though. Even if the Nats walk out, they'll still provide confidence and supply to the Liberals, so very little would change.

I hope Gladys come out of this squeaky clean.

She would be gold at a Federal level. I think her personality type is one of high integrity. She just reminds me of those really straight girls at high school who never had a boyfriend and got 100% on their exams.
