Tourist refers specifically to people traveling for pleasure to some sort of destination, while a visitor can be a synonym but it has a broader connotation, as it can refer to anyone visiting someplace else. A businessman in another city on a business trip is a visitor to that city, but he's not a tourist; if he goes there on vacation, he is both a visitor and a tourist. If you go on vacation to visit your grandparents, you are a visitor in their home, but not a tourist.
