This map is confusing. Hmm... I don't think it's race or religion, or income or age, so what's left? Gender? Maybe it's the male vote? Or maybe it is race, but the White vote?

None of the guesses I've read here would explain the Northeast. The rest of the map is conceivable, but I know of no demographic that is Republican in the Northeast and is Democratic in other places.

Unfortunately the starter of the thread hasn't been online today, though it would be great if he could reveal the answer.

Uh...no. Tongue  The African American vote is much, much more Democratic than that everywhere.

Only registered Independents voting?  Although I've read New Hampshire has more registered Republicans than Democrats, yet it still backed Kerry in 2004 and only narrowly went for Bush in 2000, so that's probably not it.  Maybe it could be a certain group of Independents, or anyway a voter's registration is a possible element to look in search for the correct answer, whatever it is.

Good guess, but many states do not even have partisan registration.

Since you guys were in suspense, this is a map of only Catholics voting and only Catholics who attend church weekly at that.  It's just an estimate, but according to exit polls, churchgoing Catholics were very Republican in the Northeast and South, pretty much a swing group in the Midwest, and Democratic in the West.  This is probably a function of the Hispanic vote.

Ah ha!  So I was very close to right twice.  I guessed both Catholics and churchgoers.

Interesting.  I guess this means that white, churchgoing Catholics are Republican everywhere and the Hispanic vote tips some Western states to the Dems. However, I'm surprised to see Minnesota as Democratic since it does not have a high Hispanic population.

As to the Catholic vote:

Minnesota goes democrat on that map because of the liberal northern part of hte state.  That area is very heavily pro-labor/unions but also very Catholic, and thus it tips it towards the democrats.  We also have one of hte lowest correlations of weekly church-goers and voting with a specific political party.

We don't like politics on Sunday and we don't like church Monday-Saturday Smiley
