Have you been to the Sahara? It is a dry world with less than 100 mm rainfall every year. However, there is a lifeline through it in the areas west of the Nile in Egypt. In fact, the areas were wetter in the past according to a new study.
Savino di Lernia, a professor at the Sapienza University of Rome, studied the fossils(化石) on a 140⁃square⁃meter rock in the Sahara Desert. In fossils between 10,200 and 8,000 years old, around 90% were fish bones. This shows the rock was close to a large lake.
The environment at that time was a good fit for humans. The Sahara even held large animals like elephants until about 5,500 years ago. It began to dry out around 7,400 years ago. In fossils between 5,900 and 4,650 years old, fish bones only made up about 48%.
The climate(气候) keeps changing, and the desert areas in the Sahara are even larger. The environment we live in are not always in its place. To fit us for the changing environment, we’d better take lessons from the early humans.

(   )3.What can we learn from the third paragraph?
A.Large animals took the place of fish.
B.The lake dried up 4,650 years ago.
C.Large animals died from dry climate.
D.Fish was the main food for early humans.
(   )4.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The Sahara was once a rich land.
B.The environment of Africa is worse.
C.The earliest humans were much cleverer.
D.Human activities have changed with the climate.

I think the two questions are badly designed which make it hard even for a teacher.

For 3, I think none fits.
For 4, I think B is the best.

For #3, A clearly is not true based on the passage. B and D could be true, but can't be inferred from the passage. C is definitely the answer.

For #4, B is definitely not the answer since we can't infer from what the passage has to say about the Sahara what might be true about Africa in whole. C is not the answer either since the relative cleverness of humanity in various ages is not covered by the passage. Indeed, since the passage doesn't comment on human activities, D isn't likely the answer the author was looking for. A is probably the intended answer.

In any case, these questions are far more about thinking skills than English comprehension.
