OK, how about the best train station you have been to? Big or small.

Inverness—> Kyle of Lochalsh is excellent, but my favourite station is I think Corrour. A mention has to be made as well of the Charles Holden stations along the Piccadilly line.

I don’t know what is remarkable about Tamworth. I haven’t been there so I’m probably missing something.

Just a great place for trains - on two levels, which is not that common for the UK. There are obviously better stations like that in the US, I just haven't been to them.

I do find Gare de Lyon in Paris to be pretty pleasant for a train station. The new Gare des Guillemins in Liege is quite impressive, but the old one was pretty horrendous.

As weird as this sounds, I remember my 11-years-old self found Dublin Connolly very cool when I went there. I also loved the corridor with services and amenities running above the platform level at Lübeck Hauptbanhof, although that is a station I visited without using.

The real answer is probably Firenze Santa Maria Novella for big stations and (mostly because of its location and all the memories I have there, although unsurprisingly it often gets crowded to an absurd degree in the summer) Monterosso for small stations.

Edinburgh Waverly will always be my personal favourite. It's just the right combination of Victorian gothic and functionality, that it's both scenic and effective.

Berlin Hauptbahnhof is a behemoth of a station. It's not historic, but it runs well, and you can buy a ticket to basically everywhere in Western Europe. The sheer scale of the place is impressive, and it's one of the few stations where I can miss a train and actually enjoy the waiting time.

Hamburg Hauptbahnhof is strangely charming for a fairly simplistic terminus. Not sure why, it just speaks to me.

Madrid Atocha gets points for the greenery and the general vibes.

Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof, like the inner city itself, is beautiful. Definitely one worth visiting. It's hard to talk about without getting strange looks, but the museums on the old rally sites, and the way they approach the history as a whole is fascinating, and important (essentially, the Nazi's used the centuries of cultural heritage wrapped up in the city to try and legitimise their insanity in the eyes of the public. Imagine a fascist President talking about America's great future at Gettysburg or Yorktown, and you've got the picture).
