Figured I'd start this up since the news just broke that Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms won't be seeking re-election to a 2nd term. This might obviously go without saying, but this race presumably just got completely upended by this news, not least given the relatively little amount of time - less than 6 months - left to go before Election Day.

Unknown as of yet. According to the article, she was offered a Cabinet post during the transition, but declined it in order to continue serving as Mayor. In any event, something certainly must have changed since then for her to reach this decision.

She's going into the private sector:

With that news, Abrams should clear the Dem governor primary.

An Article from the AJC mentions several candidates as potentials to run, most interesting imo is Jason Carter

The Walgreens story was a total myth

I really think she's going statewide or Biden admin

Wow, didn't expect KLB not running again. So she's either eyeing a gubernatorial bid - thus meaning Stacey Abrams sits this one out - or joining the Biden Administration in one role or another. I doubt she goes back to private life, at least under normal circumstances.

She's too smart to challenge Abrams imo. She could go for LG though

KLB is not running for statewide office. She was fighting headwinds with COVID and police misconduct. She's probably just over it. She would have still won a second term.

From her statement it seems she just simply doesn’t want to be in public office anymore.

Agreed. Abrams is a shoe in for the nomination if she runs, so it wouldn't really be realistic for anyone major to challenge her. Lt. Gov is a good enough position for KLB.

This was under the assumption Abrams doesn't run for governor. She hasn't announced a candidacy yet.

Interesting. Doubt she joins the Biden Admin because I don't see anyone from the cabinet leaving so soon. And if she intended to join the admin, why didn't she few months ago when Biden offered a position? Either she goes to the private sector or going for a statewide office in 2022.

Might be a personal/family thing too.

Jason Carter would be interesting, though I feel that he would be better as Lieutenant Governor in 2022 or maybe as Senator in 2028 or 2034 assuming Herschel Walker defeats Raphael Warnock in 2022.

I guess he didn't get to grift enough the first time? Or is he just so unemployable in the private sector that he literally has no choice but to try & return to government?
