I wonder what the deal is with Cornyn. Being reelected by 10 points and outrunning Trump by 5 does not imply a -12 approval rating.

His approval among independents is 21/38. Among Republicans 57/18. A lot of right-leaning voters don't like him or have no opinion, but probably voted for him anyway.

There is a problem with the name of the pollster.

The poll was commissioned by the Texas Tribune and the University of Texas but it was done by Yougov.

So nothing to do with TX-UT Tyler.

It is a pretty usual pattern, Cornyn, contrary to Cruz has always had a big problem with the most right wing faction on the GOP (see how they tried to primary him in 2014 with Stockman), they don't like him but in a general election when the choice is between him and democrat they will go for him.
