I think Reagan would have won, but not by the margin he had against Carter.

In an effort to make breakthroughs in the midwest, Kennedy picks legendary space explorer and Ohio Senator John Glenn for Vice president.  This succeeds in bringing Ohio into the Kennedy column, but otherwise the strategy fails to make for a winning ticket.

The liberal Kennedy makes no headway in the south or west.

The charismatic and affable Reagan sweeps through the south, much of the midwest, through the plains, mountain states, and west, in winning a convincing victory.

Reagan/Bush            338
Kennedy/Glenn         200

(As opposed to Reagan 489, Carter 49)

Try 1972, and you have an idea.

Kennedy would definitely do better than McGovern, in spite of Chappaquiddick.

Something like this perhaps:

The final result according to my simulator would be 340-178 in favor of Reagan.

Sorry Tred, but even on my sim... Which I had no interaction with, Ted Kennedy did win PA. In fact he has won it every time I've done that scenario.

I doubt they have the reaction from Chappaquiddick programmed in.  In 2004 he had to be pulled from Kerry campaign stops in the state because of the lingering effect of that.

Well maybe, but the game was made in 1988, so you'd have to take your best guess... Even still, Kennedy never once lost PA, anytime I ran it through with no John Anderson.

After 35 years he still could not appear in the state.  I doubt it would have been better after only 11 years.

I just ran it again... Kennedy still wins by under 1,000  votes in PA... Reagan still wins it overall.

Why would Pennsylvanians still be so bitter about Chappaquiddick?

Who knows, Joe. I live here, and there doesn't really seem to be a "I hate Ted Kennedy because of what he did in 1972, before I was born" mentality. But, then again, I live in a town (Monongahela), that hasn't had a Republican elected official since 1933.

It's the sort of thing that only happens when Ted is coming to town.  I was surprised at the level of vitriol that spilled out from some people in 2004.  I think that was, in part, because he was going to appear near Mary Jo Kopechne's hometown in one stop.  He does just fine in Philly and other stronghold areas, and the state Dems hold nothing against him (otherwise they would never invite him.)

Ah, the level of political discord... liberal = nutjob.

Anyway - Kennedy's opponent tried to use Chappaquidick in the 2000 and Kennedy's numbers went UP. And when he used it at a campaign thing, he was laughed at... that's not to diminish was Ted did - but it now doesn't play.

In 1980 - Reagan wasn't really doing too well, neither was Carter - however - if Kennedy had been the nominee I very much doubt the degree of vitriol would have been there for him as there was for Carter.

Reagan - 322
Kennedy - 216

Oh, come on... really... First of all, it's spelled "Fabulous", and Reagan was anything but that. Since when does being liberal makes someone a nutjob... You're a nutjob if you think that Kennedy couldn't do better than Carter, and, what's more semen eater, you insult liberals, but your conservative principles are just as, if not more loony.

I didn't say liberals were nutjobs, I said Ted Kennedy is a nutjob.  He probably wouldn't get elected in any state but MA.

While I usually don't comment on these because most of them are... well, silly... this one could have happened. My only comment is without John Anderson in the race I believe Ed Clark's vote totals would have increased significantly and I wonder what effect that would have had on the various simulations.
