(After two terms of President Scott Brown that was preceded by one term of Hillary Clinton)

Trump wins the Democratic primary in a divided field that included Al Gore, Elizabeth Warren and others in a rebuke to the Democratic establishment. As he is viewed as extreme and anti-establishment by many and is denounced by much of his own party, he picks the establishment governor Deval Patrick as his running mate.
He runs on a populist message, for Medicare for All, a wealth tax and UBI, his signature policy that while viewed as radical and extreme, has become quite popular with the democratic base. He downplays social issues like racial/LGBT/abortion stuff but is still left-wing on it. He is center-right on immigration and gun control and is heavily against PC/woke culture still. Trump attacks Cheney on being a warmonger and his pro-free-trade stance. Trump also brings attention to Cheney’s apparent health problems and corruption controversies around Haliburton.

Dick Cheney runs originally unopposed in the GOP Primary, backed by the establishment despite being out-of-step with the base (which has become more populist) and disliked by many. However Ron Paul (who didn't challenge President Brown in 2012) surprises everyone by almost beating Cheney with a libertarian populist message (although there is accusations that the primary was rigged in Cheney's favor). He picks establishment Lindsey Graham as his running mate.
Cheney runs more against Trump rather than on policy, drawing attention to his lack of experience and his own experience. This works a bit as Trump is extremely hated, although Cheney is too. Cheney often talks about how ‘dangerous’ Trump is for the country and his radical stances on economic issues.
