According to an interview on the Oklahoma City ABC affiliate at 10:25 pm CDT Sunday, August 20, 2006, Tom Coburn says if he gets accomplished what he wants accomplished in the next 4 years, he will not seek re-election in 2010.  He said he will definitely not run in 2016 for a third term.  He committed to the Oklahoma voters no more than two terms.  That may be one of the reasons he was elected.

It will be interesting to see whether he runs in 2010.

I'm sure he'll run.  I don't see all abortions being outlawed by 2010.

Although I disagree with most of his politics, Coburn does seem fairly honest and legitimately concerned with his causes.  I would not be surprised to see him step down in 2010 (except if Brad Henry is considering a Senate run) and I would be surprised to see him run for a third term.

He didn't give any indication whatsoever what his plans are for 2010.  He's not even thinking that far ahead.  He's thinking August and September 2006.

I think he'll run, too, Scoonie, but I wouldn't be a bit suprised if he steps down.  He seems to be a man of his word (a vast-minority in Washington), so I don't see him running for a third term in 2016.

As much as I would like to see him step down, however by what he said with him  getting accomplished what he wants to get accomplished would mean the country would be in much much sadder shape than it already is in.  And we would be a complete theorocy where abortion doctors are hung in the town square.

Good.  Then we can get Carson in office, finally.
What Republicans would run for his vacated seat?  Watts?

I also don't see federal spending being cut by 1/3rd, another one of his major goals.  This is probably mainly talk, imo.  And way too far away.

I did not, I voted for his Democrat opponent, Brad Carson, though my family voted for Coburn.  I was a little disappointed when Coburn won, but I decided to get behind him since whether I like it or not, he's the Junior Senator from Oklahoma.  My next hope is for Jim Inhofe to somehow fall out of favor with Okies in the next two years so we can get fresh blood, and maybe someone a little more moderate.  That is an uphill climb for the Democrats or other Republicans, but not insurmountable.

He's advocating no abortions, not to hang abortion doctors in town squares.  That might be a little bit of an overestimate, just like I oppose gay marriage but I don't support lighting them on fire.

Wrong; he advocates the death penalty for doctors that perform abortions.

I oppose gay marriage but I don't support lighting them on fire.

Gee, that's awfully tolerant.

Haha. I also don't see the word "evolution" being removed from every single science textbook in the country by 2010 either.
