what would happen?  I think it'd be likely that rather than partisan 'hacks', you'll get many personality cults like LaRouche and the personalities with the most clout and money would win the elections. 

Any other ideas?

I agree. Parties help to weed out these kinds of folks and provide some degree of clarity to the election process, as well as providing a very rough guide of where the candidates stand on the issues.

maybe a voting process-say 48 people are equipped well enough to get on the ballot-the top 20 vote getters go to the next round, then 4 or 5 to the Presidential election...
Seems like anything's better than this two party system...

I would agree.  In todays society, it would be difficult for just two parties to regain control if the Democrats and Republicans were dissolved.
