Say in November 1979, Jimmy Carter announces that he won't seek reelection to a 2nd term. How does 1980 go instead? Assume any other historical events happen exactly as they did.

Ted Kennedy wins the nomination but Reagan still wins easily

The democrats probably very narrowly keep the senate though

Ted Kennedy would never have won the Democratic nomination. I think Edmund Muskie would have been the nominee instead of Carter. He would have done better, but still lose.

Taking Anderson out of the race, I could see a result like this:

✓ Former Governor Ronald W. Reagan (R-CA)/Former CIA Director George Herbert Walker Bush (R-TX): 363 EV. (51.75%)
Secretary of State Edmund Sixtus Muskie (D-ME)/Senator Wendell Ford (D-KY): 175 EV. (45.19%)

Mondale gets his turn four years earlier and loses, though not as badly as Carter.

Teddy Kennedy would of been Elected Prez, CALI would have done it for Bobby Kennedy in 1968 and Teddy Kennedy in 1980

If Nixon and Regan flipped TX, the Ds would have won Cali, 1960 Cali and TX were the bellweathers

Vice President Walter Mondale (D-MN) / Mayor Tom Bradley (D-CA)
Fmr. Governor Ronald Reagan (R-CA) / Fmr. CIA Director George Bush (R-TX) ✓

Give or take Georgia, but I doubt a Carter that depressed bothers campaigning much and a black running mate would have lots of Georgians turning out for Reagan.
