I had always thought Van Hollen was in line to be Speaker until he jumped into the Senate race in 2016.  Interesting that Raskin may face the same choice from the same district.

Van Hollen umped into Senate he is friends with the Kennedys and thought Joe Kennedy was gonna serve in 2030 but he was also friends with Markey so he didn't endorse anyone totally different situation than Ben Cardin

Politico up with a story that multiple significant players are preparing for Cardin to retire.

Angela Alsobrooks is already staffing up reportedly (hired Tim Ryan's campaign manager) - she would be a prohibitive favorite and could potentially clear the field. Raskin and Trone are also mentioned.

Looks like a good call for Cardin to retire. Hopefully we can get some young progressive. But a good progressive who's willing to get things done.

Didn't see one for this race.

Why would Alsobrooks be a prohibitive favorite? Is she more well known than Raskin or Trone?

Yeah, I've always been under the impression that Sarbanes was the designated heir: partially cause they had the same political career trajectory, partially cause MD-03 was drawn so awful in 2011 specifically for Sarbanes to have an advantage running statewide, and partially cause they actually live(d) close to each other.

She has one of the most rock-solid bases in the state - we polled the 2022 gubernatorial primary and MD-4 primaries for separate clients before she declined to run for both, and she had convincing leads in both even against declared candidates (including a statewide officeholder).

She's also a key Wes Moore ally (her endorsement likely sealed the primary win for him with the support it garnered him in PG County) and if he backs her out of the gate it could build a Baltimore + PG County coalition that would be insurmountable in a statewide Democratic primary.

She's also been a close friend of my partner for over a decade now, so I'm not biased at all Smiley

I don’t know if it’s just me but I always have noticed politicians Wikipedia pages get polished up before they announce a big run.

Case in point in the last few weeks Alsobrooks got an updated portrait and another paragraph or so added to her page. I don’t know if it’s just Wikipedia polishing up as they become prominent or if it’s their staff

Despite knowing nothing else about her, I must refrain from supporting her if Cardin retires because she went to Duke for Undergrad.

(But seriously, I'd rather someone like her to get the seat instead of someone from the aged Maryland Democratic establishment like Raskin.)

Raskin would be my preferred candidate here, but it's obviously totally understandable if he passes. Running in a crowded and potentially bruising statewide primary while fighting cancer sounds like an absolute nightmare.

Honestly given his cancer I wouldn't be surprised if he retires from politics in general.

Wow, I think this will yield a large Democratic primary field. Not really sure who would be the front runner, either.

I imagine Republicans will attempt to recruit Larry Hogan again, but I view this as a Safe D seat regardless.

He won his first election in 1966, four years before the current President won his!

I'd like to see Raskin run for this seat, though I would understand if his health was a larger priority right now. I just saw he announced his cancer is in remission, so that's great news. Alsobrooks would be a good candidate as well.
