Ben Cardin will be 81 on election day, so he's a potential (likely?) retirement.  I've been trying to think of whom his likely successor would be, but I'm drawing a blank.  Maryland is fairly sizeable state and is deep, deep blue, so why is the Democratic bench so thin?  I get that there's a Republican governor there, but even so...  Anyway, who's next in line for Cardin's Senate seat?

Cause he can't win in Missouri and Maryland's already exported one-carpet bagger so they're owed one. (or I misread MD as MO).

The obvious answer is John Sarbanes, scion of the Sarbanes dynasty and Representative from the 3rd District, which sent his father Paul, Barbara Mikulski, and Cardin himself to the Senate. Maybe Jamie Raskin, who represents the 8th District once held by now-Senator Chris Van Hollen, could have an outside chance with his growing national profile, but he's probably a bit too progressive for a Democratic primary electorate in the state.

The reason why Cardin may stick around and Inhofe and Grassley are 85 yrs old, is that Manchin has endorsed statehood, in a PVI 3.1 Election, D's keep the H and 53/47 Senate and DC statehood is enacted and we get two Afro Senators.

So there is no need for Cardin to retire and he is the same age as Inhofe and Grassley

I think Raskin is going to stay in the house and try to climb up leadership. I believe it'll be Sarbanes.

Used to live in MD.

Going to be bold here and say that Raskin doesn't go for it. I think he has enough sense to know that he's going to have more power in the house than in the senate.

Sarbanes will probably run imo same with Anthony Brown.

Mfume could run as he came very close to getting the nomination in 2006.

I really don't think Trone runs

You do realize Cardin isn't planning on retiring, he would have announced them already and Inhofe and Grassley are 85,

IIRC the CW was that Sarbanes was likely to run for Governor rather than Senate

Mfume will be 76 years old by 2024, so it's hard to imagine him running for Senate for the first time at that age.

Anthony Brown is a strong possibility.  John Sarbanes would certainly have some legacy support, but I don't know if he really has a strong constituency within the Democratic electorate.

Raskin would also be very strong, but he probably should stay in the House.  I honestly believe Chris Van Hollen would be Speaker of the House right now if he hadn't run for Senate.

I wonder if Delaney will run, not that he would get anywhere.

Considering that he managed to blow a 28-3 lead in 2014, I can imagine the state Democratic establishment probably doesn't love him. I know a Senate race will be different, but I still think they'd prefer someone else.

Tbh a part of me wishes he retired back in 2018 and we got Sen Ben Jealous instead of Jealous being a sacrificial lamb for the Governor race

Donna Edwards might throw herself and, as might Mizeur. As much as Raskin would make a great senator, my dream is him being the next speaker (unlikely?)

He would lose to Franchot badly in a primary. I don't see why he would do that

He might run but I could see him as more likely running for Governor.

Someone young, I sincerely hope. Brown and Sarbanes have legitimacy, but in such a safe seat, we could really do a lot better to build our bench than to run dudes already in their sixties.

In my opinion, Maryland has a surprisingly weak bench, but I think it would be Jamie Raskin's seat if he went for it.  Compelling personal story + national prominence = advantage.

Unless he waits until 2030 to run for Gov again.
