What if John Edwards won the 2008 Democratic nomination, but the Rielle Hunter scandal came out in between the conventions and election day?

McCain wins, flipping at least the following states from OTL : CO, FL, IN, NH, NC, OH, and VA, thus putting him at least at 273 EVs.

He might get replaced on the ticket if early enough. Whoever his VP was (Hillary?) could take over. As was briefly discussed following Pussygate in 2016.

John Edwards: 227 electoral votes

This. Even with some of the worst national conditions possible, McCain snatches victory out of the jaws of defeat. Dems would have a large self-relfection after this election. However, I wonder what would happen in 2010 in this scenario.

Have to wonder how many people would care between Iraq and the recession.

I feel like if Trump could win with Obama not being particularly unpopular, Edwards certainly could win with how unpopular Bush was in 2008.

But the difference is that Trump won in 2016 mostly because Hillary Clinton was very unpopular (including among Bernie Sanders' supporters), was not charismatic and had so much baggage (the scandal about her emails and Benghazi). But John McCain was more popular than Bush, in fact he had a favorability rating around 60 % during the time of the general election campaign.

McCain narrowly wins, but the Democrats still net gains in Congress (though not to the extent that they did with Obama) due to split ticket voting. McCain is a lame duck from the start and Obama or Hillary open an electoral can of whoopass on him or his VP in 2012.

2008:

Edwards likely wins the popular vote by a bit more than Gore.

But 2012...

But if it is Palin...
