$11 is not a liveable wage. $15, done gradually over the course of four years, is a true living wage that supports those you need our help. The evidence does not show a net increase in unemployment, indeed this money is more likely to be spent in our real economy than if we just let the CEOs get ever more exorbitant profits. This bill will be a major boost for millions of people, reduce inequalities in our society and reduce poverty. It will also reward the essential workers in Atlasia and begin to repay their service to us in our national crisis. It is time for us to build on the accomplishments of the last two years and go further.

The sponsor reached out to me regarding this legislation. I deem it important for the increase in the minimum wage to be gradual, as to not cause massive unemployment via layoffs. Increasing the minimum wage in increments is the best approach in my view.

Objecting to the current amendment. I am open to the increase happening over two years. As a general point though we want to minimize instability for businesses, especially in this economy, while still giving workers the help they need and deserve.

Offering a new amendment. As COVID has been so hurtful and disruptive for many businesses, it is best to spread the path to $15 out a little further to mitigate impact on currently struggling businesses.

Shouldn't it be over a matter of months instead of years? I mean we have elections every two months...

There has always been this weird dichotomy where elections exist on an accelerated time scale for playability but statutory concerns remain an an annual basis. Some of this is down to necessity, we can barely do a budget every year much less one every four months, for instance.

I'm fine with it but I'm interested in seeing what other Senators think.
