I know it is the home of Dodd, Lieberman, Murphy, Blumenthal...

But doesn't Connecticut scream white privileged Republicans?

Isn't Connecticut the wealthiest state in America?

All the richie-rich are there (Scott Pelley, Brian Cashman (Yankees GM), etc.)

Shouldn't Connecticut be Republican?

How is a state where nearly 40% of its population has a college degree supposed to vote Republican?

A large % of its population is college-educated, so no wonder it votes D. Also, it's not quite the richest state. NJ and MD are wealthier.

Party affiliation has not been determined based on wealth gradients as the primary determinant for decades. Religious affiliation and educational attainment make up a much more significant factor in determining such things now.

For every Cashman and Pelley there is at least one minority working-class, relatively poor immigrant-origin person in New Haven and at least one well-heeled white liberal in Hartford.

To those saying because it’s so college-educated, you do realize college-educated whites were a Republican group before Trump, right? Connecticut didn’t just start going blue in 2016.

But it’s a part of a larger question as to why New England isn’t Republican.

Pelley is probably apolitical or probably not even registered to vote, a lot of journalists have a old-school mantra that journalists are supposed to be apolitical or objective. Charles Gibson of ABC and Anderson Cooper of CNN does not vote; Gibson retired in 2009, so he probably has voted; he is probably a moderate; I think Gibson said the last president he admired was Gerald Ford in 1976, when Gibson was a young reporter at ABC.

Cashman is a Republican, he has donated to Rudy Giuliani, Paul Ryan's Prosperity PAC, is a friend of Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, who attended the college Cashman went to....Georgetown Preparatory School before he was a baseball intern for George Steinbrenner, based on Cashman's father's connections.........he is probably a moderate Connecticut Republican......

Exit polls showed that Democrats have been winning college-educated voters in Connecticut at the presidential level as far back as 1992, the last time it was considered a swing state.

Excuse-moi?  Huh

New Haven has a reputation for being quite rough around the edges, IIRC

Excuse-moi?  Huh

The City of New Haven has a reputation for being quite rough around the edges despite hosting Yalies

I can assure you that my intentions in referring to it as "famously rich and prosperous" were not sincere.

Why is Illinois, which is wealthier than Indiana, more Democratic than Indiana?

Because people do not always vote their own pocketbook. When we all recite the Pledge of Allegiance, we end with "... with liberty and justice for all," .... not "with liberty and justice for ME."

Why doesn't Kalawao County Hawaii vote republican? Kalawao starts with the letter "K" and the Ku Klux Klan, a major faction of the republican party also starts with the letter K.

To me, voting should be about how you communicate your wants, needs, and what you are willing to do for others in a constructive way. You don't have to take an oath look out for everyone's interests like the people you are will be voting for must. Besides, no one can protect or empower you if they don't know your personal interests.

I wouldn't go that far but I would say there used to be about 40% of the voters... and now its more like 60% of the voters who now believe that what always appears to be the most logical way forward for them is not in their long term best interest. As if people think that they don't know what's best for themselves.

The trend among college educated whites tends to date back to the Clinton area where you saw many of the formerly Republican suburbs in the northeast and Mid Atlantic.   Trump certainly put the pedal to the metal on that trend, but the movement predates Trump

To be fair in a healthy political system college educated people would be Republicans and the uneducated working class Democrats Tongue

In addition to Connecticut being one of the most educated states in the US it's also one of the least religious. Only 2 of the 20 least religious states in the US are reliably red.

This is a huge part of it. The vast majority of CT residents are either a.) non-religious, or not affiliated with any one church; b.) lax-catholics (i.e. only go to mass on holidays); or c.) members of more liberal mainline protestant denominations. There is very little evangelical or baptist presence, which makes it hard for the modern Republican infrastructure to be successful here.
