The Alaska government is having to do drastic cutbacks on spending because of the loss of income due to the pipeline failure. (IIRC, the state has lost about two-fifths of its income for about six months as a result.)  What effect will this have on the gubernatorial race?

Considering that Murkowski was already expected to come in third in the GOP primary before this happened, you may be right.

What does Murkowski have to do this?

The state's losing most of its revenue?  Maybe they've already voted out Murkowski and replaced him with Jon Corzine!
