"Train" (in Middle English "trayne") derives ultimately from the Latin verb "traho" meaning "to pull or drag". (Hence why the string of carriages drawn by a locomotive is called a train, but I digress.) It developed the sense of teaching from the practice of "training" the branches of fruit trees and vines to be in specific shapes so the fruit would have space to grow, have sufficient air to not rot on the branch, and be easy to pick. From training plants to have desired characteristics, it was a simple analogy to do the same with men and animals.
