Not only Lil Nas X managed to break a chart record recently, so did The Weeknd this weekend:
The seven-times platinum-certified single
Blinding Lights by Abel Makkonen Tesfaye aka The Weeknd hit the top 10 if the Billboard Top 100 as of February 29, 2020, and has been staying there for exactly 52 weeks now (with a short break during Christmas time, though), this week placing No. 3. No artist has achieved such a long top 10 stay with one single before. (The previous record was held by
Post Malone's Circles with 39 weeks.)
Despite having a phenomenal successful year in 2020 with the worldwide success of "Blinding Lights" (#1 on the year-end charts in the US, the UK, and Germany, where his single received diamond status) and its parent album, the Weeknd received zero nominations at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards on November 24, 2020. The gesture spawned much controversy and was a shock to critics, fans, and Tesfaye himself. He responded via social media calling the Grammys "corrupt" in popular social media posts and that not being nominated felt like a personal attack against him. As a consequence, he refused to attend the currently held 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards show, and he's contemplating never submitting his music to the Recording Academy and never attending award shows again.
