China policy is a very tricky issue, and this is far too simple.

Are we recognizing two Chinese governments? Or are we recognizing the ROC as the only Chinese government?

Both are dangerous, but the second one is insane.

I'm not entirely opposed to the first though.

Clearly based on the content of the bill it does not recognize the ROC as the sole government of China, given that it does not list the mainland as one of its controlled territories. We should recognize the independence of Taiwan as it is clearly its own state and a currently weakened China gives us an opportunity to. It may be worth looking through all those islands and taking out some that might be controversial, off the top of my head I know that Taiwan fully controls Penghu and Kinmen but I'd need to research the rest.

This bill recognizes the Republic of China and the ROC's control of the islands it currently controls. So this bill doesn't recognize the ROC's control of the mainland.

I would like the input of the Secretary of State (once he's confirmed) on this before we vote on it. Does the current government of Taiwan even support full official independence as its own entity?

No difference has been noted from IRL by the (former) Game Moderator on Taiwan, so the government is currently led by the pro-independence DPP.

This wouldn't constitute a massive change in status of Taiwan.
We're not recognizing it was the "Republic of Taiwan" but rather reducing its current territorial claims and then recognizing that.

It would be a change though, and would antagonize Beijing.

This could start a devastating shooting war that Atlasia could get drawn into.  Since the PRC has hundreds of thermonuclear weapons at its disposal, I'd recommend every member of this House to reconsider their support for this, even if it sounds good on the merits.

I'm all for this. Taiwan's more of a legitimate government than the People's Republic of China is.

The hell? That seems a bit absurd, do you want to expand on this?

I would say its more deserving of its legitimacy than the PRC. Not that the PRC doesn't exist.

Yeah, essentially. The PRC govt. is anti-democratic, authoritarian, and imperialist while the Taiwanese govt. has democratic legitimacy.

The RoC derives its legitimacy from the people, the PRC derives it's legitimacy from brute force and mass violence.

With no objections, this bill is now at a final vote. Representatives have 72 hours to vote aye, nay, or abstain.

Mr. Speaker, this is a bad bill that will lead to endless conflict.  The PRC will retaliate against Atlasia for this useless gesture.

Note to all that this would effectively establish a Two-China Policy, not unrecognize the PRC
