I'm not sure if this is the correct thread for it, so feel free to move it if it isn't.

The trial for Derek Chauvin (the lead culprit in the death of George Floyd) begins tomorrow. If things don't go the way the public want, things can and will get messy, and Keith Ellison could be in quite a bit of trouble when it comes to his potential re-election.

So how do you guys think everything will go?

But yea, if anyone from MSP is reading this thread, please stay safe!!

How do they even select jurors for a case like this? Probably 99%+ of potential jurors are biased. The killing of George Floyd dominated the news cycle for weeks and anyone who doesn't live in a cave already has a set in stone position on this.

They gotta find some moderates heroes without TV, internet, or human interactions lol.

Weren't people demanding an all black jury for the trial?

I wonder how that's gonna go...

Is this still going to be televised? If so, I am having OJ flashbacks.

Maybe only in Minneapolis? I’m not sure and I’ve got doubts that it will.

He has to be prosecuted.

I want him executed, on the death penalty.

Um, no. Manslaughter charge is appropriate.

I don't even think Minnesota is a death penalty state. Is it?

Also we have a big update:

No white people were allowed access to the area by local activists out of a supposed concern for the "healing" of the community

what

Not surprised

One of the jurors appointed today is a black man. Smiley

There'll be riots if not all of the jurors are black. I've got a gut feeling about that.

I caught parts of a CBS News Special Report about the first day of the trial this morning, before I left out for work. Opening statements were delivered today. I'm somewhat surprised that CBS (and presumably other networks) decided to show coverage of that, given that the networks usually aren't interested in such procedural elements. But then again, the George Floyd murder was an event of national and international prominence, and it does feed into the media's need for stories that drive ratings and profits.

Sorta like the OJ Simpson trial?

If Chavin gets off, say goodbye to these politician's political futures: Jacob Frey, Keith Ellison, Tim Walz, Michael Freeman, etc. They'll lose... The MNGOP will choose an electable nominee who can appeal to the Karens in the suburbs who fear city violence miles away and who don't want police defunded....

Dean Phillips, Angie Craig will go down as well.......

Same thing nationally with the other suburban House Dems

Walz is probably safe if Lindell's the GOP nominee. Otherwise that could be a close race to watch.

Any chance Fischbach could run for governor? Or maybe she doesn't since she'll have only been in congress for two years?

Key Takeaways from Day 8

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/key-takeaways-derek-chauvin-trial-234400982.html

Any idea on how long this trial is expected to last? I remember OJ Simpson's was 11 months I believe, but I doubt Chauvin's will be that long?

It's clear he had the intent on killing Floyd, he will be convicted and face the death penalty

Minnesota abolished their death penalty in 1911, therefore the worst he can get is life in prison (which probably won't happen if they overcharged him).

If what I read was correct, second degree manslaughter is the lowest charge against him.  Right now I think that's what it will end up being.

And assuming that's what he gets charged for, it can be anywhere up to 10 years in prison, or maybe less than 5 according to this website: https://www.legaldefensemn.com/sentences-manslaughter-minnesota/

Considering it's not a life sentence, there will absolutely be rioting in this case. Maybe not as bad as if he were freed, but could still be bad nevertheless.

What’s the composition of the jury actually ?

https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/10/us/derek-chauvin-trial-jurors/index.html

Might be outdated though, and I'm hesitant on sharing this due to the vulnerability of the jurors being doxxed if Chauvin walks free.

Mistrial is the worst case scenario now I think. Before I thought he’d probably get off. Now I don’t see how all 12 jurors could possibly vote not guilty for all charges. I think guilty for the manslaughter charge at least is the most likely scenario.

Someone remind me again how much time Chauvin could face with a manslaughter conviction? I previously heard numbers in the High Teens, but maybe that was for one of the lower degree of murder charges that I don't think we're altimate Lee brought to trial. I think Grumps mention the other day possibly up to 10 years?

I believe the latter is correct. Up to 10 years, but could also be less than 5.

Wouldn't surprise me if anyone in the jury that votes not guilty for any of the charges gets doxxed online, especially with the Daunte Wright riots happening now.

And I heard Tim Pool talk about this on his podcast. If the jury finds Chauvin not guilty for even one of the charges, the media will not give the full context and just say that Chauvin was found not guilty for Floyd's murder, resulting in much more rioting.

In these types of cases the identity of the jurors are usually kept sealed for a while to protect them from that kind of stuff.

They'll probably find a way. It's an unfortunate reality.

Some breaking news, Chauvin has invoked his 5th amendment right of self-incrimination and will not testify at the trial.

I have edited the poll due to the verdict being announced soon. Unfortunately due to forum stuff, I can't control how many votes you guys can cast, so you guys can only cast 1.

Huh, really?

Nothing I saw on the news about this. I assume the poster meant soon in that case has now gone to the jury.

Yea you’re right, but we’re still closer to it than when this thread started.
