Interesting question. I would assume the recall effort would die that moment, but it might be a question individual state court would have the answer.

From a political perspective, it may cause major public backlash, especially if this is a maneuver to get the previous governor back in power through appointment as the next in line. Kinda doubt even a friendly legislature would approve such a nomination.
