The former, the latter probably describes a fairly significant number of normally Catholic Republicans and maybe also some Smith loyalists in New York who hated FDRs faction of the party.

Hughes-Cox. Not even that close really. In addition to what the previous poster pointed out, a good number of Louisiana parishes swung towards Hoover in 1932.
