Let's say in 2008, Trump runs as a Dem, running on policies similar to Bernie's Campaigns in 2016/20, making him a different type of populist. He successfully wins the nomination against Obama and Hillary. On the Republican Side, they nominate VP Dick Cheney, since he successfully had heart replacement surgery, and McCain doesn't run.

Discuss with maps.

Possibly even more; Cheney was EXTREMELY unpopular at that time. Like, low teens approval rating at best. And if Trump can even tap into a fraction of the WWC appeal he later had has a Republican, this could be a mega landslide.

Unlikely. Coal country flipped because of the Democrats' positions on environmentalism, and a Trump candidacy wouldn't change their perceptions of the party.

Trump is a much better fit for WV than Obama, however even if close Cheney has the edge and KY will be in Cheney's bag. Republicans will do any mental gymnastics to remain on their side of the aisle. Here they will see Trump as a NYC playboy, which to be fair he is of course.
