I have thought for a long time that it is more likely than is generally thought that Pres. Bush will replace VP Cheney as his running mate this year.  Then I saw a story on a news show about a rumor that Bush is thinking about doing exactly that, and picking Rudy Giuliani as his VP to replace Cheney.

I think that Bush should replace Cheney for the following reasons:

-While Cheney is highly competent, he is not charismatic, and is therefore more a candidate for appointive than elective office.
-Cheney is from a heavily Republican, 3-electoral-vote state.
-Cheney is not a potential successor for Bush in 2008.
-Cheney has some negatives, and does not bring Bush any voters that he doesn't already have.

Cheney could be a good choice as Director of the CIA to replace George Tenet.

As far as his replacement, I don't think Giuliani would be the right choice.  I would go with somebody from the upper midwest, a region that either Gore won narrowly in 2000.

Does anybody have any thoughts on this?

Cheney would be great as CIA Director and Bush would do better with someone from Ohio.  Unfortunately, there isn't any Republican available from that state.

Besides, Bush is so loyal that there is no way he replaces Cheney.  He will sink or swim with him as long as Cheney is healthy.

I wish he would replace Cheney as it would certainly help him in at least some states, but he won't. I don't even know of a well known republican from Ohio or anywhere nearby that could be a decent VP pick. Anyone?Bush will keep Cheney though.

Cheney will get an "heart attack"
This will be the excuse.
I personally don't believe in it.
Remember that practically, Cheney is the president and Bush is the front mask.

What do you think was really in Cheney's mind when he initiated the Iraqi war?

Guliani getting on the VP ticket could really hurt Bush.  Guliani is quite liberal and that would alienate Bush's core.  Also even with Guliani as VP, Bush isn't going to be able to touch Kerry in NY

George Voinovich? or is he already a spent force? (that's a question).

Specter would also alienate the base.

If Bush can guarantee himself Ohio, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin he'll be in good shape.  Even if he loses Ohio and Pennsylvania, winning Wisconsin will give him a lot of "outs," where all he has to do is win another decent state like Iowa or Oregon.

Won't happen.  I don't see a candidate that is all that much better than Cheney.  Plus, Bush has invested millions in Bush-Cheney gear.

Voinovich won't be picked as without him the senate seat becomes competitive.

Too much bad blood, I think.  I would like to see Coleman get the nod.

To answer the stated question in the topic, no I don't think George W. Bush will become our next Vice President. Smiley

If Cheney did have to be replaced, my strategic pick would be:

John Boehner - Representative from Ohio on his 7th term

Went to college in Ohio (Xavier University), as well as worked within state.  Currently he is Chairman of the "House Education and the Workforce Committee" and Vice-Chairman of the "House Committee on Agriculture," two committees which could help Bush continue to promote his domestic agendas.  Also carried his district by 70% in the last election.

That would be a poor move, since it would be seen as nothing but political.  Not to discredit Michael, but now would not be the right election for him.

I guess Guiliani may the best one to choose, mostly because he is so well known nationally.

Cheney is from Texas, he just has voter registration in Wyoming so he can legally be Bush's Running Mate.

Pataki's not as liberal as Guliani, but would still alienate the base, and Pataki won't make NY anything other than a Kerry landslide in NY, not to mention Pataki's popularity ios not what it once was (probablyy at its lowest levels or close to its lowest levels since he became NY's govenor)

Cheney is from Wyoming.

He was born there, he grew up there, he went to high school there, he met his wife there, he represented them in Congress for a decade.  He lived only a few years in Dallas, where he ran a company.  This is like saying my father lives in Ontario, not San Diego, because he spent two years as an advisor to the Ontario city planning department.

it would be easy to replace cheney.  dick could conviently have health problems.  bush could then 'reluctantly' grant cheney's wish of being removed from the ticket.
