Well, there goes that nomination.

Maybe Biden should consider nominating someone else?

I remember reading speculation that Tanden was a "sacrificial" nomination but I thought it was a stupid notion at the time. Thinking about it though, Manchin sinking Tanden probably gives him cover to vote for Haaland.

I always found it pretty amusing that the Extremely Online Left loves to criticize #Resistance types for focusing so much on Trump's tweets and not his policies (while simultaneously hardly ever doing so except to take backhanded swipes at Democrats as well), but also was obsessed with Neera Tanden over her tweets and not the tons of other legitimate issues in regards to her. Also going to be funny to see them celebrating Joe Manchin now, lol.

Still probably a good thing, since as noted there was still very valid concerns about Tanden.

Remember guys, Manchin literally never votes against the party line when it matters, and it's stupid and naive to think that he will. I'm sure that he's only doing this because he knows there are loads of Republicans to pad the margin.

(This is sarcastic in case you can't tell)

Tanden wasn't good anyways, so who cares but this better not be Manchin trying to flex.

Now the question is, does Biden pull the nomination? And then who does he replace her with? Bruce Reed comes to mind.

He probably won’t be the only Democrat to oppose her nomination.

Bernie already said he'd vote for her but I can imagine Manchin just opened the floodgates for the moderates to come and sink her.

I know, but he was apparently on the shortlist with Tanden.

Y'all, can we calm the f**k down for literally 5 seconds & just wait & see how this plays out a bit more. It's entirely possible that he's been told Tanden has at least 1 Republican vote (so, literally pick 1 of your Romneys, Murkowskis, Collins', etc.) & that this is therefore not a time where his vote actually matters. But thank you for your failed attempt at a burn, though, very cool!

It’s either that or a sign Tanden is getting a Republican vote

This just means Tanden already has the votes. Manchin isn’t going to go against the party line if his vote actually matters.

It’s either that or a sign Tanden is getting a Republican vote

The question then is, who?

Ironically, Tanden has mean tweets about Collins, Murkowski and Romney.

Could also be Manchin trying to flex ahead of reconciliation.

Murkowski would probably make the most sense: she'd get to look like a good person who's capable of forgiveness, while at the same time, she'd get to show the Alaskan Democrats & independents that she's gonna need for an RCV victory next year that she's sincere in wanting to work with the administration when & where she can.

I'd figure she'd do that with Haaland though.

She'll probably be forced to oppose Haaland on account of not being able to afford pissing off the oil industry, which employs 10% of her state. Supporting Tanden would present nowhere near as much of a link to any direct impacts on her constituents' livelihoods as supporting Haaland would.
