Will this race be D vs. R or D vs. D? Mike Garcia and Darrell Issa were among the names of potential GOP candidates. Might Ro Khanna be a Democratic challenger?

Hopefully Ro challenges Padilla; he'll lose by a bigger margin than Sanchez in 2016 and be out of Congress altogether so it's a win-win

Would Ro Khanna make the top two if a serious Republican runs for Senate?

Yeah I don't think Mike runs unless CA-25 really gets nuked. He'd run if it was Biden +15 probably, +25, he might not.

Might Devin Nunes run? CA-22 might be completely different.

"He'd move to (read: run in while still living wherever he currently lives) a new Safe R district before mounting a hopeless campaign for Senate," I respond, acting as if answers to any of ERM64man's questions actually mean anything.

So far, no prominent Democratic or Republican challenger has declared candidacy.

So reupping this. With the news that Khanna may be (probably is) challenging Padilla, this story about his friendship with Matt Gaetz is going to get some scrutiny.

"Ro Khanna spent his time in Washington 'hanging out' with a child rapist and sex trafficker. Now he denies they knew each other. What was Ro Khanna doing behind closed doors with a child pimp? What is he hiding?"

Ro Khanna could face a primary challenge if he stays in the House. If he runs against Padilla, he loses.

Khanna would easily win

Edit: the primary challenge

A primary challenge for his House seat? Yeah, probably. Against Padilla for Senate? I want some of whatever you're smoking.

It was not even a little bit clear what you meant, which is why I asked about / addressed both scenarios.

I can't imagine Padilla losing. Being an appointed Senator doesn't make him a Democratic version of Luther Strange.

A good test is "would this person have had a strong chance of winning an open seat (primary and general) had they not been appointed?"

Padilla, T. Smith, etc. pass that test. Loeffler and Strange, not so much.

Eh, not necessarily: Strange was already holding an elected statewide position - state AG - when he was appointed, but the circumstances of his appointment & their proximity to the gubernatorial investigation which he'd been in charge of arguably doomed his chances.

Every California House Democrat except Ro Khanna endorses Alex Padilla.
