Both major parties divide.  Democrats along the progressive/establishment wings and Republicans along the populist/non-populist wings.  The populist Republicans nominate someone even crazier than MTG, and George Conway acts more like a generic pre-Trump conservative than his 2021 self.  He is easily chosen by the House in an election where no one reached 270 electoral votes.

Romney runs as an Independent only on the ballot in Utah due to Trump being nominated again.  The election is close enough that Utah's 6 electoral votes going to Romney denies both major party candidates 270.  Most states have Republican-led delegations, but there is some desire to avoid Trump getting back in office.  So, a deal is reached for the House to select Romney.
