The genre never truly represented the Zeitgeist of the times.  90s "grunge" was the last gasp of the angry suburban whyte youth.

60s rock = social protest
70s = post-Altamont, it was all about getting laid and getting high, from Ziggy Stardust to disco.
80s = everything from New Wave to hair metal accurately depicted the era of capitalist excess.  

Now that hip-hop is at the vanguard of left-leaning politics, there is no room for rock in general, let alone the Emos.  And all the rightists have flocked over to that god-awful "nu-country."
