Team Charlie.  I did not vote for him in the first two elections, but that 2018 D candidate was never going to beat Ol' Charlie.

I'll be voting for Governor Baker in 2022 - and it will be among the very few times I have ever voted for a Republican in a general election.

He has been a great Governor for this state and widely popular for a reason.

I can only wish that more people like him or Phil Scott (or Hogan) would be among Republican party candidates for office, and that this party wouldn't slide to complete idiocy (exactly what it did in the last decade, though it's not alone in this). There is little hope for this right now, but - may be in the future?Huh

It would be hilarious if the ticket ends up being Downing/Hinds. Hinds succeeded Downing to represent the same district (largest and westernmost in the state) and they're both bald white guys in their forties.

Well, they can instantly advertise their team as "new bald leadership...."))))

If that's true, it's probably because he has data indicating he would lose a Republican primary.

Republican primary is open primary, so, most of those voting in it, are, probably, Indies. And he is popular among Indies. So - i doubt...

Probably - too tired to fight own party, which doesn't want to support the only candidate, who can win, and instead - will root for unelectable Diehl

P.S. I said that many times, and repeat: US electoral politics becomes more and more idiotic with time...

The situation there is better, but not MUCH better. And after Phil Vermont will turn Democratic (for Governor) too...

Hopefully the inevitable Governor Healey goes too far and the state elects a Republican down the road to stop the madness.

It took 2 attempts even for Baker. And where do you see "second Baker"?

Most likely either someone in his administration or a Youngkin-type outsider businessman. After all, Baker himself was an official in Bill Weld's administration.

Small correction: Youngkin would have zero chances of victory in Massachusetts

No. It is a loss. You need blue state Republicans and red state Democrats. You need flexibility.

Baker was a check on the Democrats' taxes.

Even moderate Democrats find property taxes confiscatory. Why overtax? Where is the taxes going? Baker vetoed a lot of tax increases and his tax cuts created a lot of jobs in Boston, etc.

Sir, don't argue with Democratic (or Republican, for that matter) "activist". It's useless. They are .... singleminded (to put it VERY mildly)...

Diehl would still put up a reasonable margin. He did well against an incumbent (Warren) in a blue midterm, even winning a county.

60-40 at best...

BAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Congratulations to Maura Healey!

You seem to be happy that he's not running for reelection.

Again: don't be surprized. He is a Democratic "activist" after all. That's natural.... for them...

The last Republican on the Governors’ council also retired last year. They could bring a few former officials out of the woodwork, but it looks like the MAGOP is giving up (for the time being).

MAGOP is mostly (especially - on party level) Trumpist now (the chairman Lyons is good example), and such candidate has zero chances in this state... They even managed (yesterday) to lose state legislative seat they held for many years...

What exactly is so wrong with a Democrat being happy a Democrat will be elected?

Anyway, this race is now Safe D and Healey will be an incredible Governor.

Because your beliefs cannot be sincerely held if they just so happen to align with one particular party. You are only sincere if you believe in nebulous things like bipartisanship and centrism, obviously.

No. Because only idiot can say "BAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA" to second most popular governor in the nation (and - popular even among Democrats).... No respect=no culture...

I'm so confused.

So, because he's popular, I'm not allowed to prefer a Democrat be in his position?

Of course - allowed. But - in a intellectially cultural way (IMHO). When i see "good riddance"  not because person is a "bad politician" (that includes "unpopular"), but strictly because person's party membership - excuse me...

D's are finally rid of Baker , we can win the Gov mansion again

It will not be any "achievement". Would they win governorship in Alabama - another matter..

P.S. And it wasn't Democrats "getting rid of Baker". They couldn't do it in 2018 and wouldn't do it in 2022. He decided HIMSELF.

It indeed wasnt the dems getting rid of him.... was his own party....

He would win primary, despite all that hate from Trump fanatics....

Polling showed that he'd lose the primaries so I presume that's why he retired.

Unlikely. Primaries in Massachusetts are open, and number of Indies (among which he was very popular), taking part in Republican primary, would, most likely, surpass number of Republicans...

Yeah, even for Baker she would be very serious opponent. It will be funny to see what Diehl will be able to do... I would still prefer more sane Republican candidate, but in this case it will, probably, not matter.

Endorsing Healey. She will be the next Governor of Massachusetts, and it won't be close.

Against Diehl it willn't be for sure))))

I think she only jumped into the race because Baker announced his retirement wouldn't have challenged him otherwise. She easily just could have waited for another cycle.

Fully agree. IIRC - she is only about 50...

The Rs did D's a favor by pushing Baker out the race we would have lost this race for sure if Baker ran

Obviously. For too many Republicans it's better to lose heavily with Diehl then to win with Baker... Idiots....

Lyons was (and IS) an extremist, so - really "good riddance". It was sad to observe far right wing Republican candidates in former "liberal Republican heaven". Carnevale seems to be a standard Reagan conservative, but at least - there is hope that she understand difference between Massachusetts and Oklahoma...
