BAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Congratulations to Maura Healey!

You seem to be happy that he's not running for reelection.

I think the race would still be Likely D with Polito, as she's more conservative than Baker and was mainly chosen as lt. gov. for ideological balance. For sure she's not a very staunch ideologue, still to the right of Baker.

The last Republican on the Governors’ council also retired last year. They could bring a few former officials out of the woodwork, but it looks like the MAGOP is giving up (for the time being).

MAGOP is mostly (especially - on party level) Trumpist now (the chairman Lyons is good example), and such candidate has zero chances in this state... They even managed (yesterday) to lose state legislative seat they held for many years...

They will be irrelevant in the state if they continue down this path.

Its not just many years. Buchanan was President the last time a Democrat held that seat.

What exactly is so wrong with a Democrat being happy a Democrat will be elected?

Anyway, this race is now Safe D and Healey will be an incredible Governor.

Because your beliefs cannot be sincerely held if they just so happen to align with one particular party. You are only sincere if you believe in nebulous things like bipartisanship and centrism, obviously.

I don't think there's anything wrong about celebrating Healey, but there certainly doesn't seem to be any regard for Baker. Trumpists think he is a RINO, and progressives view him as no different from any other Republican.

No. It is a loss. You need blue state Republicans and red state Democrats. You need flexibility.

Baker was a check on the Democrats' taxes.

Even moderate Democrats find property taxes confiscatory. Why overtax? Where is the taxes going? Baker vetoed a lot of tax increases and his tax cuts created a lot of jobs in Boston, etc.

The problem is that red states will very rarely elect Dems.

In Governor's races, it's pretty even.

MA, MD, and VT seem fairly balanced by LA, KS, KY at the moment.

Difference is that the red state dems all got elected due to sheer luck and trash opponents

Well, red state Dems tend to break from the national party less in this era.  You had Baker/Hogan/Scott all publicly opposing Trump in 2020.  Scott announced he was voting for Biden.  There's no comparison on the Dem side.  Even JBE didn't endorse Trump.

Sure, but they could've announced "I'm a Trump democrat" and still lost their elections had they faced normal GOP opponents.

The only red state dem gov that got elected mainly due to skill and not opponent quality was Bullock.

He's been in the cabinet for less than a year! What a loser. Hopefully Healey mops the floor with him.

That seems to fit Baker and Hogan as well (Calling Hogan's opponent "trash" might be a bit harsh, but his campaign was basically electoral malpractice).

Scott is his own thing and barely a Republican.

So did the whacko tin foil hat wearing nut jobs just screw the Republicans out of a Governorship?

How rare is it that one name flips a seat from SAFE to the opposite SAFE?

Healey, Kennedy, Walsh all would make good Governor's although I’m not as high on healey as most.

Congratulations to Maura Healey!

Honestly, I don't really care that much. I don't live in the state and things won't be much different since Baker pretty much just governs like a generic D (mostly because the Democrats hold veto-proof majorities in both chambers of the General Court). However, the flip will be nice as it will help blunt our losses in other gubernatorial races next year.

This much is true, and this is the reason why Baker is retiring. His approvals among Democrats are higher than they are among Republicans, and he wasn't assured of winning a Republican primary. Moreover, I think it's likely that Baker is simply tired and is ready to leave office.

I would caution the Democrats against complacency, but probably the only way Republicans win this now is if Martha Coakley is the Democratic nominee.

That's unfortunate to see Baker retiring. The second best Republican currently in office. He wasn't so popular in a blue state for nothing.

With him out of the race, this is probably Safe Democratic now, with Maura Healey as the favorite for the nomination.

I can not wrap my brain around the idea that the era of moderate R governors in Massachusetts is over, at least for now, and our tiny Republican party did the deed. It's been more than 30 years since Weld was first elected.
