Quote

Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy (R) knocked Democrats on Sunday over the speed at which the House voted to impeach former President Trump last month, comparing it to a "show trial," the likes of which he said would have been found in the Soviet Union.

Speaking with host Chuck Todd on NBC's "Meet the Press," Cassidy said he believed House Democrats had done an "incredibly poor job" at building a case for impeachment ahead of their vote last month. Ten House Republicans joined Democrats in voting in favor of impeaching Trump over inciting an insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

"The president wasn't there. He wasn't allowed counsel. They didn't amass evidence. In five hours, they kind of judged, and boom, he's impeached," Cassidy said. "Now, I'm told that under the Watergate, under the Clinton impeachments, there were truckloads of information. Here, there was a video. There was no process. I mean, it's almost like, you know, if it happened in the Soviet Union, you would've called it a show trial."

Cassidy went on to claim that there was no "defensible process" behind the House's impeachment vote. Despite the characterization and criticism of the proceedings, Cassidy claimed he would act as an impartial juror.

The proper means of explaining an Impeachment trial after a Prez left office is that its a political trial not a legal trial and they don't have to go by criminal law to convict the Prez.  The D's have an excellent case for an Incitement case but not a conviction

As long as Biden has the Hunter Biden issue the Rs are unmoved by Impeachment

Fortunately, 5 people died, it would have been a conviction if there were hostages or mass killings

Wasn’t Bill Cassidy one of the first Republicans who recognized Joe Biden’s victory and one of the few Republicans who kind of supported impeachment at first?

He's right, but for the opposite reason he thinks. This absolutely is a show trial because acquittal is a foregone conclusion.

It’s still so weird that this dude actually showed up, took notes, and generally did his job as an impartial juror, admitting when one side had better arguments and evidence than the other, even if it didn’t fit with the conclusion he wanted going in. It SHOULDN’T be weird, but it is. And it seems so random that it’s Bill Cassidy of all people.

The argument that Trump "wasn't there" is nonsense as he was asked to be present and simply declined.

What this means is that he was genuinely moved but the evidence presented, and thought to himself, I need to live with myself for the rest of my life, and I have to just do it. I said I had self limited my tenure anyway. Time to honor it. I am out of here after my term expires. Good riddance to the "bad place."
