Why did southern states such as TX/FL/VA swing so hard towards Eisenhower? Is it because he was a war hero? Or was there some other factor? Eisenhower was the first Republican since Reconstruction to win multiple Southern states twice (Hoover won several in 1928 due to anti-Catholicism).

I think it was this plus his Texan origins.
