Why did southern states such as TX/FL/VA swing so hard towards Eisenhower? Is it because he was a war hero? Or was there some other factor? Eisenhower was the first Republican since Reconstruction to win multiple Southern states twice (Hoover won several in 1928 due to anti-Catholicism).

I think it was this plus his Texan origins.

The South had already started to Trend Republican by that point. Northerners were moving to Florida, Virginia was become more business-oriented than agriculture-orientated (Ike was pro-business), ditto for Texas (and by this point, most rural areas in Texas were pretty much assimilated to the Great Plains vs the Deep South). Tennessee already had bastions of GOP support from the Civil War.

Louisiana still mystifies me, though.

Some pretty good thoughts on why Eisenhower won LA in 1956 when this question was asked over a year ago:

He also got the endorsement of Texas Governor Allan Shivers

Probably because Ike was not a traditional Republican and his war hero status outweighed his party affiliation. Also, the South was already trending Republican at the time and Stevenson was a lackluster candidate.

In Mississippi and South Carolina he actually was as an independent on the ballot.
