The South had already started to Trend Republican by that point. Northerners were moving to Florida, Virginia was become more business-oriented than agriculture-orientated (Ike was pro-business), ditto for Texas (and by this point, most rural areas in Texas were pretty much assimilated to the Great Plains vs the Deep South). Tennessee already had bastions of GOP support from the Civil War.

Louisiana still mystifies me, though.
