When the bathroom in your home is unoccupied, is the door closed or open?  My daughter's boyfriend comes from a house that apparently closes the bathroom door when not in use, this has lead to several "who is in the bathroom for so long!?" complaints from other people in the house (I'm not sure why they don't try knocking).

I've never given it much thought. You can look at the doorknob and see if its locked in my house, that's a much more reliable indicator.

Depends. If you’ve just done a certain kind of *business* in there, you should of course close the door to avoid stinking the rest of the house out.

doesn't that just hold the stank in the bathroom then?  I suppose since you're a European you can just open the window since you guys are smart enough to not live in climate controlled conditions 11 months out of the year like us weird Americans.

Almost  always open. I don’t want to have to conduct a census of my house every time I need to go to the bathroom.

Always open for precisely this reason. I have friends who are door-closers and I have to count everyone who I know is also at their place whenever I visit.

I keep pretty much all the interior doors in my house open unless there's a reason to specifically close them (closets and the laundry room excepted, of course)

As a general rule, open unless the bathroom is visible from an area visitors would be in when visiting other than the bathroom itself or a hallway.

Open so that nobody thinks its occupied, with the exception of a really bad dump that left a lingering smell. That's when the door gets closed after a liberal misting of air freshener.

I live by myself so I almost literally never close the door.

I misunderstood the question (perhaps it needs a "remove vote" option).

My answer is open, although I voted "closed" because I thought it was asking what we do if no one else is home.

I guess it depends on who's been the last to use the bathroom, but I usually close it after using it, and other members of my family seem to do it as well, so I voted "closed", though it happens more often for the small bathroom than for the large one. Funnily we, or at least I, keep the doors of other rooms open when no one is in, however. It may have something to do with the fact that the small bathroom is the only room in my house whose door opens outwardly.

I close every room when I leave it. Force of habit. Also I don’t want my dog going in my bathroom.

Open if I'm taking a piss, closed if I'm doing something else.

As I live alone I basically never close it in my apartment ever lol. In fact the handle is kind of shaky and the door never fully closes but it's not an issue.

Where I am now at my parents I usually don't in the basement where I stay at night.
