Alabama or Georgia I guess.

Alabama has “Sweet Home Alabama,” To Kill a Mockingbird, etc. Georgia has Gone With the Wind and is kind of the heart of the South in many ways.

I think of Appalachian rednecks in WV/KY making moonshine. The most Southern thing to me is the Hatfield–McCoy feud which was a big dispute between the two families which led to over a dozen dead from both families.

Faulkner is a reason to associate the South with Mississippi, but there's no good reason to be a Faulkner fan unless you think good writing has nothing to do with being readable.
