Definitely not the worst thread ever, but this one was the first ever “Opinion of [poster’s name]?” thread, which spawned what many consider a regrettable trend for Forum Community:

WalterMitty apparently coined both the "discuss with maps" meme, and the "FF vs. HP" meme.  However, while he came up with the FF vs. HP dichotomy, he says here that "Freedom Fighter" on its own was first used by BRTD and opebo:

im pretty sure i wasnt the first to start using the term 'freedom fighter.'  i picked up on it.  im pretty sure opebo and brtd used it a few times first.

as for 'horrible person', it was the poster nini who made a thread sometime in 2005 pointing out the fact that i used the term 'horrible person' a lot in describing people.  from then on i started using it as an option.

im pretty certain i started 'discuss w/maps.'  that was completely innocent.  then started people starting mimicking it and it took off.

Ummm...I don’t think that was a case of older posters being out of touch with younger posters. In my experience, the vast majority of 15 year olds know what BDSM is.

He was 15 at the time (presumably finishing grade 9 at that time); it would not be weird at all to be unaware of what BDSM was at that age.

In my experience, people tend to "discover" sex and what not some time when they are 13-14; with the latest bloomers being 15. (And yes, some do it earlier)

I was actually sort of thrown around in school somewhat since I was one of those late bloomers, not really knowing anything about sex and what not until I was 13-14; and in school I had to pretend to know more than I actually did (and of course when caught out lying it was a miserable time)

I would have expected ProgressiveModerate to know what sex was and what not (ie, not be S019); but I wouldn't necesarily expect him to know what BDSM is; he would be "beginning" in that sense.

Like I said on that thread also, there are kids and very young teenagers on Atlas. So when dealing with sex topics and what not you should err in the side of caution and assume the person you are talking about isn't trolling. A 13 year old doesn't need to know about that, he'll discover it himself when the time comes.

Tbf as an extremely sheltered and innocent kid, I remember being coaxed by popular kids into doing a skit for a drama class where I would walk into a porno store and have several humiliating sexually charged punchlines. When the teacher realised I was being fed lines (I remember being confused between the concept of pawn shop and a porn store) she nearly a blew a casket. in that way i can empathize with PM - nobody likes feeling like a doofus.

I’m pretty sure I’m the same age as PM and I know about BDSM etc, but there are certainly some people my age who don’t, regardless of their hobbies and interests. Anyway, it’s not a problem that he didn’t know, and he knows now right?
