Torrecelli's scandals led to him (illegally in my opinion), being replaced with Frank Lautenberg in 2002 IRL.

If this didn't happen and Christine Todd Whitman was the Republican nominee, she wins.

Christine Todd Whitman (R) 54%
Bob Torricelli (D) 45%

If Torricelli is replaced on the ballot (presumably by Lautenberg), it's a very different race however.

Frank Lautenberg (D) 50%
Christine Todd Whitman (R) 48%

Lautenberg ran specifically because Whitman nor Kean Sr. ran (the former was EPA Admin though, so she really couldn't). With Whitman running, he stays out and the party replaces Bob with either Pallone or Andrews. It'd be close, but I do think Whitman wins in the end against the lesser known congressmen and a scandal-plagued Bob. whether she survives 2008 or not is the real question.

She'd probably retire in 2008 or probably lose to Andrews or Pallone.....

Torricelli loses if he stays on the ballot it's that simple, especially if he's facing Whitman, who was quite popular
