Ted Cruz is blocking a vote on Gina Raimondo's nomination to be Commerce Secretary because she hasn't clarified her stance on Huawei.

Quote
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Thursday formally placed a hold on the Senate voting on the nomination of Gina Raimondo, President Biden’s pick for Commerce secretary, due to concerns Raimondo has not clarified her stance on Chinese telecom giant Huawei.

“I’ll lift the hold when the Biden admin commits to keep the massive Chinese Communist Party spy operation Huawei on the Entity List,” Cruz tweeted in response to a report from Bloomberg Business that he had blocked a vote on Raimondo.

Cruz’s block comes after over a week of criticism from both House and Senate Republicans of Raimondo’s comments on Huawei during her confirmation hearing.

The Commerce Department under the Trump administration added Huawei, one of the largest 5G equipment manufacturers in the world, to its “entity list,” effectively blacklisting the company over concerns it posed an espionage threat due to ties to the Chinese government.

Raimondo made clear that if confirmed, she would "review the policy, consult with you, consult with industry, consult with our allies, and make an assessment as to what’s best for American national and economic security,” but did not specifically commit to keeping Huawei on the entity list when Cruz questioned her about it during her confirmation hearing.

Mitch McConnell says he will vote for Merrick Garland to be the next Attorney General

Quote
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will vote to confirm Merrick Garland as the next attorney general, five years after refusing to act on Garland's nomination to the Supreme Court.

A McConnell spokesperson confirmed to CBS News that the Kentucky Republican supports President Biden's pick to lead the Justice Department. Politico first reported his decision on Tuesday.

Garland was nominated to the Supreme Court by former President Barack Obama in 2016, after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. McConnell refused to consider Garland's nomination, arguing that the Senate should not fill a Supreme Court seat during an election year, and instead let the American people decide. After the GOP won the White House, the Republican-controlled Senate filled the vacant seat with Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch in 2017, the first of three justices nominated to the bench by former President Donald Trump.

Well, this is interesting. I would thought McConnell would be a no vote on this one, given his, like most Republicans, loyal support of Trump. In fact, I thought the Republicans would be unanimously against anyone Biden nominated to the Justice Department.

Didn't McConnell actually vote for most of Biden's nominees so far?

Yes, but again, I thought he, like pretty much every other Republican, would be a no vote against any Biden nominee as Attorney General.

Seventeen Republicans, Bernie Sanders and Angus King all voted Present?

I imagine most of the Republicans would have voted no if there was no Present option, and Sanders might have voted no from the left, but why did Angus King vote Present here?

Senate approves four ambassadorships by voice vote today.

Quote
The Senate confirmed two Republicans nominated by President Joe Biden to top diplomatic posts Tuesday.

Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake was confirmed as U.S. ambassador to Turkey, and Cindy McCain, the widow of GOP Sen. John McCain of Arizona, will be the country's representative at the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture.

Both Arizona Republicans endorsed Biden during the 2020 presidential election. They were confirmed Tuesday by voice vote.

....

The Senate on Tuesday also confirmed Victoria Reggie Kennedy, the widow of the Democratic Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts, to be U.S. ambassador to Austria, while former Sen. Tom Udall, D-N.M., was confirmed as ambassador to New Zealand.

confirmed by the same vote

I'm honestly surprised that neither Manchin nor Simena were no votes here, especially Simena. This seems like an easy nomination for her to sink to help her win votes among conservatives in 2024.

A little shocked no one voted against Jack Markell.

I know he's relatively non-controversial, but I was expecting at least 5-10 Republicans to vote against him based on his past as a Democrat who served in elected office.

Emanuel (Japan Ambassador) confirmed 48-21:

Thomas (9th Cir.) passes CLOTURE 42-25:

I'd be curious to see who the no votes were against Rahm Emanuel. I wouldn't be shocked if some of the more progressive Senators, like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren were no votes here.

Rahm Emanuel got confirmed by the hilariously anemic margin of 48-21 as Ambassador to Japan, which is just about the worst cultural fit imaginable. It's like Cellucci as Ambassador to Canada, on steroids and bass-boosted. Japanese society values composure, patience, and in-group solidarity with the people in one's vicinity rather than with strangers with whom one shares some demographic or identity category. Has anyone, anywhere, ever, associated any of those values with the name "Rahm Emanuel"? I doubt it.

I don't know. Caroline Kennedy was a pretty bad fit too, and in hindsight probably should have been named Ambassador to Ireland or Ambassador to the Vatican instead.

Any idea why Weil failed?

Also I believe that is the first no vote from Kelly on anyone.

That no vote from Kelly tells me he's getting nervous about his reelection prospects.

Has he announced what his vote will be on KBJ yet?

I'm surprised Biden nominated anyone to be Ambassador to Yemen, given the ongoing war there.

I sort of understand Paul and Hawley's objections to Sullivan-Young, but what's Murkowski's objection here. She usually doesn't vote against Biden nominees, and certainly not nominees that most of ger caucus is voting for.

I understand Schumer's up for reelection, but come on. He's facing no primary opponent, and I'm pretty sure Joe Pinion is not a serious candidate in the general election. He doesn't need to campaign, and can be present at the Senate pretty much every day.

Schumer has covid, show some respect.

He does? Where was that announced? I would have thought that would be front-page news in quite a few newspapers.

Hagerty (R-TN)
Leahy (D-VT)
Lujan (D-NM)
Markey (D-MA)
Portman (R-OH)
Sasse (R-NE)
Schumer (D-NY)

So looks like if there was full attendance it would have been 64-36 (putting the absent Ds+Portman in the yes category).

I'd say 63-37 if all Senators were present. I don't think Portman would be a yes vote for Childs.

Kennedy was an Aye on CLOTURE so it would be 66(!) at full attendance.

A little surprised to see so many Republican Aye votes here, for the likely nominee to replace Clarence Thomas if he drops dead/resigns tomorrow or something. I thought for sure Kamala's tie-breaking vote would be needed.

Desai (9th Cir.) confirmed 67-29:

[...]

Yep - Dems think moving this one up in line will make Sinema vote for IRA, GOP thinks being nice on this will help her be willing to vote No....

This one is puzzling to me. I can't recall the last time a circuit court judge was confirmed without cloture vote. I don't think it's happened with a Biden nominee before today. Desai looks to be an great nominee too.

On the other hand, unfortunately, Rachel Bloomekatz will require a discharge vote. I suppose that should have been expected since she'll basically be primed for consideration for a future SCOTUS vacancy. The conservative equivalent would probably be Justin Walker.

I recall at least 2 under Trump - both IL nominees.

As I said, it's purely a Sinema reconcillation bribing technique for both sides - Desai is from AZ. For whom will it work, we'll have to wait and see.

Knowing Sinema, probably the Republicans.

Yikes, I hate to say this, but Hassan's doomed reelection bid isn't as important as filling an appellate court seat, and Duckworth probably doesn't need to campaign much anyways. Either she wins by twenty, or the GOP wave is so high she loses no matter what she does.

They both should have been in D.C for this vote.

Hearings are not re-held, but the nominees still need to go through Markup again (which because of minority holds, takes two meetings). Nominees will thus begin reaching the floor again on February 2.

In other words, they all need another vote? If so, for those that tied in committee last term it's safe to assume they will not need discharge petitions this year.

I'm also wondering when we're going to find out the makeup and balance of the Senate Judiciary Committee for this Congress. With the new expanded majority and a Senator from each side retiring (Leahy and Sasse), I suppose it's likely to see a replacement for Leahy but not Sasse. Assuming no Democrats leave the committee, I wonder who will be the new addition.

I'd assume it'll be Welch or another Senator on the committee not likely to run in 2028, since he isn't running in 2028, and that avoids causing fights among Democrats in the Senate.

Also Dianne Feinstein was on Judiciary. There's no way she's getting that high-profile a committee in the new Congress, given her descent into senility. Someone has to replace her too.

I'd love to hear Hickenlooper and Bennet's objections, here. I would have thought a Defense Department nominee who got Nay votes from Democrats would get them from the left (so, like Warren, Brown, Baldwin, Sanders, for example).
