DC Unrest Megathread

To review up to now:

The House and Senate began their meeting to certify the electoral college votes. Votes were being counted until Arizona was reached, where Rep. Paul Gosar objected. The Senate and House then broke into debates about the objection.

Protesters stormed the Capitol Building, resulting in chaos. One woman has died of a gunshot wound, and upwards of 20+ people have been arrested.

Things seem to have calmed at least at the Capitol, however, the crowd is refusing to leave in defiance of the curfew.

House Speaker Pelosi says the certification will continue tonight, despite the violence. CNN reporting the Senate may gather at 8PM.

Some centrist Republicans have called for the activation of the 25th amendment or Trump's resignation, while Rep. Ilhan Omar has started the process of Articles of Impeachment. Rep. Cori Bush is also starting a process of expelling Republican members of the House and Senate who "supported the coup", such as Senators Cruz and Hawley.

Unfortunately, as completely true and right as your words are, I fear you are an extreme minority among Republicans and what defines conservatism today.

A few Republicans here of gone so far as to support impeaching Trump, but what about the nearly 200 Republican Senators and members of the House who actively aided, abetted, and encourage Trump for the exact incitement they call on him to be impeached for? Pretending like this is all at the feet of Donald Trump singularly is patently untrue.

I would assume everyone who supported it a year ago. Petersen and Gabbard are gone, so it would be unanimous from Democrats.

Romney + 17 Republican senators is what it would take to remove him. It seems plausible, but I haven't seen any list or evidence.

After this, I would predict full House Dems in addition to blue-state/centrist Republicans in the House, and in the Senate the full Dem roster, Romney, and likely more centrist Republicans. This isn't the Ukraine phone call where it was questionable to flip - this is the moment where Republican Senators can salvage any human decency for the sake of the future of the party.
