It's kind of hard to articualte what I am trying to say, but are places like Gillespie County, Texas, and Winston County, Alabama, still at all politically different from the surrounding areas?

It's kind of difficult to explain (particularly at 3 AM), but I think you get the idea.

I am wondering whether states that previously held unusually progressive/liberal social positions for their locales are still at all different than surrounding areas.
