Clowns, in the most general terms, are entertainers. The descendants of medieval court jesters and traveling circuses, clowns often dress in bright, contrasting colors, wear makeup and dyed hair, and engage in feats of skill and magic and sleight of hand. In other words, these clowns are generally a fun time.

But the clowns I refer to are not those types of clowns. The clowns I encounter in politics are frequently easily misled, not skeptical, peddle fear and conspiracies, and subscribe to lunatic beliefs. To a clown, nothing is true, so you may as well lie and be absurd. When you believe that nothing is real, and consequently, that nobody is real, then there are no consequences for clinging to such lunacy - so you may as well inflict harm onto others. After all, they're not real, so why would I feel bad about it?

When someone lives in clown world, they often have a perception that is so warped as to not resemble the underlying reality. For various reasons - either because they're paid not to care, or because their warped perception prevents empathy from functioning, or because they believe that they'll never be put into such an adverse position - they see no harm in neglecting their neighbors and fellow citizens.

To them, suffering either does not exist, only exists for other people whom the clown does not like, or takes joy in other people's suffering. To be a clown is to deny that other people have humanity and wants and needs, and to believe that they are not only less than fully human, but are vermin to be exterminated. To live in clown world is to constantly be in a state of schizophrenia, where some object of affection can fall out of favor and become detested, and some other object rise to take its place, seemingly with no interval.

To live in clown world is to be negligent and indifferent, so long as it validates what the clown believes to be true - regardless of objective reality. To live in clown world is to essentially see nothing wrong with carrying matches while being soaked in a pool of gasoline, and to be insane enough to want to light them, thinking only other people will be burned.

You probably know a few clowns. You probably feel we are governed by them. And those intuitions are correct. It's time to take back this country from being governed by clowns in a bouncy house.
