-Bob Dold and Brad Schneider (each other)
-Frank Guinta and Carol Shea-Porter (each other)
-Patrick Murphy from PA (Mike Fitzpatrick)
-Steve Driehaus (Steve Chabot)
-Mike Sodrel (Baron Hill)
-Ann Marie Buerkle (Dan Maffei)
-Mark Schauer (Tim Walberg)
-TJ Cox (David Valadao)

These are the ones I can think of from the past 20 years. There are definitely some older examples out there.

Elijah Cummings was preceded and succeeded by Kweisi Mfume. With 23 years in between.

In the senate, Evan Bayh and Dan Coats succeeded each other.

Is Mfume-Cummings-Mfume the longest gap between consecutive stints with only one person in between?

- Elijah Cummings (Kweisi Mfume)
- Paul Gosar (Ann Kirkpatrick)

Gosar never really left, he just moved to another district.

Also, Anthony Brindisi.

Fun fact: by virtue of his past service, Mfume is in the upper third of the US House in terms of seniority, despite having been there for less than 15 months thus far in his second stint.

Found another one with an interesting tenure: Frederick W. Mulkey (R-OR):

Quote
On November 5, 1918, he was again elected to the U.S. Senate, this time to fill the unexpired term of Harry Lane, who had died on May 23, 1917.[2] Mulkey replaced Charles L. McNary who had been appointed temporarily to the position, and who had won the election for a full-term in office starting in January 1919. Mulkey served the second time from November 6, 1918, until his resignation, effective December 17, 1918.[2] Mulkey resigned early to allow McNary to take office early and gain a slight seniority edge over incoming freshman Senators.[1][4]
