I'm sure I forgot a few, feel free to add, if they're good I'll adjust the poll.

There are tons of clips of pols eating hot dogs, fried chicken etc with a fork and knife.

Great addition. I voted for options 4 through 6, though.

Love; or anything not being some eternal power struggle.

many people here have never properly worked a day in their life, fewer still have been poor or went shopping for groceries.  You're not alone.  It's not just politicians that can be spoiled and ignorant, people who vote socialists have to come from somewhere and it's usually the loins of rich bastards. Wink

it puts you well into the top 1% I'd imagine.  Unless the lawyer is one of those good hearted ones that don't charge much or works as a public defender...even then you're still probably in the 1% or super close to it.

There is nothing wrong with that (unless you spend a lot of time sh**tting on the 1%).

I'm gonna say the first three and other: normal human interactions. They can be a socially weird bunch. I think the biggest blind spot of politicians is a general lack of practical expertise about anything.

Re: the other options. Most elected officials don't actually earn that much and most have had actual jobs at some point in their lives. They still have to budget their income and go to the supermarket. Most people (thankfully) never experience actually being poor/hungry--politicians presumably being included.

Thankfully, we live in a democracy with elected representatives as opposed to hereditary feudal lords and kings.  Resultingly, most politicians do actually have backgrounds and experiences that are "normal."   They are no less removed from daily considerations than other members of the salaried, professional UMC, for the most part.

As someone who has worked with Federal politicians, I will say one thing that does separate them from most of us is how much of a principal they get to be in their jobs.  Entire staffs exist to brief them on issues and schedule their time, lobbyists compete for their attention, and access to them is (mostly) tightly controlled.  That's probably responsible for some of the "social weirdness" they exhibit, as their interactions are almost exclusively with people either serving them or wanting something from them.  I don't guess this really that different from most business execs or top-level bureaucrats, but the flare of national politics does make these interactions more dramatic.

Part of this is they don't want to be photographed/videotaped eating foods in an unsightly manner on the campaign trail.

Nothing specifically in the options, but I'm always annoyed when politicians say, "I would be making more in the private sector!" right after they were reelected. So go in the private sector! And you knew what the job would be paying when you ran for it.

They’re just socially weird because they don’t know how to interact with regular everyday people. It’s a primitive concept for career politicians. But with people of high-income classes and CEOs you can be sure they know to speak their language pretty naturally and aren’t weird at all.

The rich and powerful have class consciousness.

People can lose track of these things if they've been moving in rarefied circles for a while, though. "Don't forget where you came from" is a set phrase about newly-successful people for a reason.

Technology, due to the median age of our legislators.

I don't understand this notion that all members of Congress are these out-of-touch 1%ers.

Members of Congress make $174k, which don't get me wrong is a fantastic salary, but it's not like they're Jeff Bezos

A lot of them come from normal backgrounds too.
