Okay, so the South is debating an anti-immigrant proposal, and I actually had this idea for a while, so figured what better time to introduce it now. Anyways this bill would allow undocumented people to not live in constant fear of deportation and get jobs and start contributing to the economy including paying taxes and also buying goods. This bill basically turns Lincoln into a sanctuary region, I don't think there's much more to be said here.

I'm skeptical about allowing illegal immigrants to work, especially since this wouldn't restrict their jobs to certain industries that may have legitimate temporary needs, such as farming, but instead give them carte blanche to obtain any job, without having to obtain a green card or work visa, provided that their local jurisdiction does not cooperate with the federal government. This could impact Atlasian employment [of non illegals] negatively.

However I do like the rest of the bill.

If the rest of the council appears receptive, I'll probably offer an amendment to strike the second section.

I guess we're running on the assumption that say a research lab, a hospital, a law firm, etc. would not hire undocumented people, unless they were very skilled, in which case they probably have expired work visas, I don't really see this being a problem. If it is then you can just say no high-skilled jobs or whatever, but most of the times these people do menial jobs, such as landscaping (and no not owning a company, but working as a landscaper).

Meh, some companies would hire illegals if allowed, some wouldn't. I don't think we can make assumptions about who would and who wouldn't. I'd be receptive to some sort of industry-based limitation, however.

Amendment:

Quote
II: OUR MOST VULNERABLE RESIDENTS DESERVE A CHANCE TO WORK

A. Section 7 of Title 11 of the Consolidated Laws of Lincoln Omnibus Act is hereby repealed in its entirety and the rest of the legislation shall be renumbered accordingly.  shall not apply to agricultural jobs, housekeeping/custodian jobs, or similar positions.

Any objection?

No objections, mostly because I know that in practice, these are the only fields that would hire undocumented people to begin with, unless they were skilled workers, in which case they probably have work visas anyways
