If "Free Silver" Democrat William Jennings Bryan, who was the party's Presidential nominee in 1896, 1900, and 1908, had been nominated as the Democratic nominee for a fourth time, in 1912, would he have gone on to defeat Republican William Howard Taft and Progressive Theodore Roosevelt?

Keep in mind the Democrats actually did win the election in 1912.

Please discuss.

Thank you.

No at least in part because the Republican nominee in 1912 was William Howard Taft.

Yes, of course, thank you.  What was I thinking at the time?

In 1912, would William Jennings Bryan have gone on to defeat Republican William Howard Taft, and Progressive Theodore Roosevelt, and realize his life long dream of becoming President?

Please discuss.

Possibly. Though I could feasibly see the election getting thrown to the House if enough Wilson votes switch to TR.

Yes. Just about any Democrat would've won in 1912 because of the split between the Republicans and the Progressives.

In fact, Wilson got less votes in 1912 than Bryan got in 1908.

Bryan could've finally won, but only as long as he abandoned Free Silver. The issue was dead, and he had lost three elections on the plank already. I think he feasibly could've won in 1912 with the split vote.

I agree here; Bryant would have been a terrible choice, but he'd win by default.
