Quote
The national rate of suicide fell for the first time in two decades in 2019, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The CDC's final report on mortality in the U.S. in 2019 showed that suicide deaths dropped by 2.1 percent in 2019 compared with 2018. Suicides were still the 10th leading cause of death in the nation.

There were 47,511 suicide deaths in 2019, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) noted, representing 833 fewer suicide deaths than the 48,344 in 2018.

The suicide rate had been increasing since 1999, according to the foundation.

AFSP Chief Medical Officer Christine Moutier said in a statement that the foundation was “heartened and encouraged” to see the suicide rate drop.

Moutier said it’s unclear what exactly contributed to the decline from 2018 to 2019 but added that multiple actions — such as legislation prioritizing suicide prevention and an openness to discussing mental health — likely had an impact.

The report comes after the CDC reported that the U.S. will have at least 3.2 million deaths in 2020, making it the deadliest year in history, largely due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Robert Anderson, who oversees CDC death statistics, told The Associated Press that preliminary data showed that suicide deaths did not continue to fall this year.

2020 will probably undo this, lets see how this play out in other countries

When you say "the divine," are you referring to King Tut or space aliens?

He's referring to himself probably.

There's nothing fun about getting a shot to the head.

I remember when Trump said the lockdowns would be worse than the disease because they would cause people to commit suicide in droves...

I am actually shocked by this statistic though. I thought for sure there’d be at least a slight increase, probably higher than average. Definitely didn’t expect the first DECREASE in decades.

That data is from 2019 and there were indications that the decline did not continue this year. Sad

This makes perfect sense. Suicide in first-world countries largely has to do with having nobody else to blame for one's failures. This year we all had something else to blame.

2019 data doesn't really matter in certain cases

This is pre-covid data

I am a failure at suicide myself. One day I won't be a failure at it anymore though.

Holy molasses! Please don't harm yourself!

Oh, interesting. Now I'll be able to test this theory.

Oh, interesting. Now I'll be able to test this theory.

Unfortunately I suspect it will be a lot higher this year.

I'm guessing the primary reason it went down in 2019 was because there's been such an emphasis on removing the stigma of seeking mental health treatment. The horror show of 2020 has thrown all of that progress in the garbage.

That's great news about 2019, though I'm a bit surprised to hear it.

Sadly, I'm not looking forward to seeing the 2020 statistics.

Posted this here before, but, suicides were down in Colorado in March and April 2020 (although calls to suicide hotlines were up). Haven't seen more recent numbers and I wouldn't be surprised is October-December had higher rates than March-May.

This makes perfect sense. Suicide in first-world countries largely has to do with having nobody else to blame for one's failures. This year we all had something else to blame.

Oh, interesting. Now I'll be able to test this theory.

You'd need to control for a lot of other extraneous things to actually rigorously test this hypothesis.

The Drug overdose death rate spiked higher in 2019 after a one year decline.  Always hard to tell the difference between intentional and unintentional without a personal statement by the deceased.  So it could be statistical noise.  Overdoses continued higher in the first part of 2020 too.  Last CDC data was thru April.  Saw  a couple of WV stories where authorities blamed the Spring stimulus for a spike there (though it was rising before too)
